Law Firm Giving Employees NICE Bikes

Employees at Seattle law firm Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro recently got a big incentive to take up the sport. Management promised bicycles worth $3,500 to any employee who pledges to bike to work three months out of the year.

Okay, they get the bikes at cost, but with 35 people signed up so far they are shelling out 63 grand.

"To me, cycling is more of a creative way of conducting business, whereas golf is more of a businessy, suit-and-tie way of doing business."

I agree.

Here is the article.

I'm considering relocating to OP.

How well is Overland Park laid out for biking (1) leisurely, i.e. on trails (2) for sport, i.e. 50-mile group rides (3) to commute/run errands, i.e. bike lanes on all roads, trails well connected throughout town, etc?

Thanks.

(I'd message you privately, but it's not clear how to find your contact info via this blog.)

Warren, that's kind of cool.

So for a commute-to-work bike $3500 is an enormous amount of money. I mean let's say you get the gold-planted 14-speed rohloff internal hub on your solid platinum frame - I still don't know if you're going to brush up against that $3500 price tag to heavily.

Good for the law firm, I'm curious, though how much the firm pays for parking for their staff. Even paying out 63K might be cost-effective over a few years.

Anon - I'm sorry I hadn't seen your comment earlier. I'll try to work up a post about cycling in OP as soon as I get freed up again. In the mean time, you can check out some information at www.opkansas.org including this link to a map of some of the wonderful trails in the area.

There aren't many defined bike lanes in Overland Park at the moment, but there are some nice roads that are wide enough to get around easily. Drivers are, for the most part, polite to cyclists.

I haven't participated in any group rides other than the Lenexa Midnight Bike Ride, but there are rides available and a good source of information can be found at http://www.jcbikeclub.org/

I'll try to work up more when I get some time. Might be a while before I can post again, unfortunately.
